Baby's protective helmet

This gas mask for babies dates from WWII.  The baby was placed inside the mask so that the head was visible through the visor. The canvas was then wrapped around the body and a strap secured between the legs so that the mask was airtight.  Air was pumped in by hand through a concertina type rubber tube.  A rubber coating on the canvas stopped gas seeping through the material, while the asbestos filter on the side of the mask absorbed the poisonous gases.
