Whistle belonging to Chief ARP Warden, Dumfries

Whistle belonging to Hugh Martin, Chief Air Raid Precautions Warden for Dumfries.  Wardens carried whistles to warn of raids and ensure that everyone was off the streets.  They wore a helmet with the letter “W” in white to help distinguish them among crowds of civilians.  Due to wartime petrol shortages a bicycle was a practical means of transport.
