ARP Wardens Badge

Badge worn by Hugh Martin during his service as Chief Air Raid Precautions Warden for Dumfries.   Wardens carried whistles to warn of raids and ensure that everyone was off the streets.  A  helmet with the letter “W” in white helped distinguish the wardens among crowds of civilians.   Wartime petrol shortages meant that a bicycle was a practical means of transport.
