Plan and Section of Rail and Chair used on Kilmarnock and Troon Railway

This plan was sent to the Duke of Portland. His address is inscribed on the back of the plan alongside a Kilmarnock postal stamp dated March 1840.   In the bottom right corner there are some explanatory notes:   Explanation   No 1  An end view of the rail , which is of maleable iron and is 15 ft in length weighing 32 pounds per yard. 2  A crop section of the chair of cast iron weight 12lb. 3  An end view of the key of wrought iron. 4  The nails of wrought iron for binding the chair to the block. 5  A horizontal view of the chair. 6  A full length view of the key.   Scale full size
