Provost MacKay
David MacKay was Provost of Kilmarnock from 1895 to 1901. He believed strongly in the benefits of art and literature for society and sought to ensure that the people of Kilmarnock enjoyed these benefits. He supported the adoption of the Public Libraries Act and was very influential in encouraging James Dick to donate the money for the building of the Dick Institute.
David MacKay was the brother of local artists Alexander and James MacKay.
