Silver penny, King John Balliol
John Balliol was the great rival of Robert the Bruce. He was briefly king of Scotland in 1292-1296. His main lands in Scotland were centred on Buittle Castle.
A silver long-cross penny, with the king's head on the obverse and a cross quatered on the reverse. The obverse bears the legend 'rex Scotorum' - 'King of the Scots'.
