Statistical Account of Scotland, The Volume 13

Robert Burns borrowed this volume from the old Dumfries Public Library.  On p652 there is an account of the Covenanter's stone at Balmaghie, a reference to several people who suffered as martyrs for the Covenanters.  This statement seems to have a struck a chord with the poet, as he has pencilled in a verse of the famous "Solemn League and Covenant" as a footnote.   This relic was discovered in Dec 1859, by Mr William McDowall, editor of the Dumfries and Galloway Standard.
