Snuff box, a gift to Robert Burns from James Cunningham, Earl of Glencairn, in presentation box

This silver snuff box was a gift to Robert Burns on his birthday in 1787 from his friend and patron, James Cunningham, 13th Earl of Glencairn. It was a particularly generous gift and was most probably Robert Burns' most valued possession.   The snuff box was given to Dumfries Burns Club by Sir James Dewar on 25th January 1920 to mark the centenary of its foundation. On the base of the snuff box Burns has inscribed, "Presented by my highly esteemed patron and benefactor, The Earl of Glencairn 25th January AD 1787 Robt. Burns" and he has added a Latin phrase meaning, "his reward is with the highest".
