Seal matrix (1)

This small circluar seal matrix features a thistle motif, with an oval bearing the inscription 'DUMFRIES BURNS CLUB'.  It is mounted on a short broad handle made form plain dark wood.   A seal matrix was used to stamp a distinguishing mark onto molten wax as a means of representing identity, authority and status.
