Postcard illustrating "Ca, the Yowes To The Knowes".

Colour lithographic postcard of a cartoon illustrating Burns' poem, "Ca, the Yowes To The Knowes".  It was posted on 16 June 1908.   "Ca, the Yowes To The Knowes" was a traditional song which Robert Burns heard and adapted, "I added some stanzas to the song and mended others".  It remains a popular Scottish folk song.   The cartoon is signed by its artist, "Hamish" and was published by Raphael Tuck and Sons.  It is an "Oilette" card and part of their "Old Highland Laddie" series II.  It is typical of many early humorous postcards on a Scottish theme.  The postcard reproduces a stanza from Burns' song which also features the Cluden Water and Lincluden Abbey near Dumfries.  In September 1794 he wrote to George Thomson, his publisher, "In a solitary stroll which I took today, I tried my hand on a few pastoral lines. Here it is".
