Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. Volume I and II, 1797

This is the second Edinburgh edition of Robert Burns' work "Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect". It was printed and published by William Creech in 1797, the year following the poet's death.  Creech had been the printer and publisher of the original Edinburgh edition of 1787.  This book comprises two volumes bound together in one.   Burns spent time in Edinburgh in 1787 following the success of the first edition of his work, published in Kilmarnock.  He was acclaimed as a poet and was welcomed in Edinburgh society.  The 3,000 copies of the first Edinburgh edition sold rapidly.  Alexander Nasmyth was commissioned by his publisher, William Creech, to paint Burns' portrait and this was engraved for the frontispiece of the Edinburgh editions of his work.
