Petition in support of James McConchie, Dumfries Schoolmaster, 1792

This letter of petition, dated 13 April 1792 is from James McConchie, a schoolmaster, to the Magistrates of Dumfries.  It has been signed by several parents of children in the schoolmasters care, including Robert Burns.   When Robert Burns settled in Dumfries in 1790, the burgess ticket presented to him four years earlier by the Town Council allowed him to claim reduced fees for his children's education at the town's academy.
