Mauchline ware trinket box
The lid of this souvenir trinket box box features a coloured photograph of a print of Robert Burns, based on the 1787 portrait by Nasmyth. The inscription on the side reads:
(lid) "ROBERT BURNS"
(side) "MADE OF WOOD / WHICH GREW ON THE BANKS OF DOON / Near Alloway Kirk"
Throughout the 19th century the cult of Burns rose to huge proportions. Images derived from his life and work, and of the poet himself were frequently used in domestic ornamentation and were to be found in most Scottish homes. The base of the box is covered in blue paper, this is characteristic of the work of Caledonian Boxworks, Lanark.
