Dumfries and Robert Burns: A Photographic Souvenir

A photographic souvenir booklet containing lithographic prints of monochrome photographs of views of places associated with Robert Burns.   This small souvenir booklet contains thirteen photographs of places in and around the town of Dumfries with associations with Robert Burns, accompanied by a short description of each place. The cover depicts the Routin Bridge on the Cluden Water, north of the town, a well known beauty spot.   The Cluden Water is a tributary which joins the west bank of the River Nith close to Lincluden Abbey, a mediaeval ruin which captured the poet's imagination. His song, "Ca the Yowes to the Knowes", features the Cluden and Lincluden Abbey. In September 1794 he wrote to George Thomson, his publisher, "In a solitary stroll which I took today, I tried my hand on a few pastoral lines. Here it is".   This booklet was printed and published by a local firm, Maxwell and Son of  Dumfries. Souvenir booklets containing photographic views were popular with the tourists of the early 20th century as very few people owned their own camera at this time.
