Burns and Highland Mary. Photographic Views of Dumfries and Neighbourhood, Kings Arms Hotel

"Highland Mary", or Mary Campbell, was one of Robert Burns's great loves.  She inspired the poems "The Highland Lassie O" and "Will ye go to the Indies, My Mary".  Burns considered emigrating to the West Indies, and may have been planning to elope there with Mary.  It is said that the couple exchanged bibles on the banks of the River Ayr in 1786.   This print of "Burns and Highland Mary" is from a photograph album presented to the Kings Arms Hotel by local businesses in Dumfries and Maxwelltown.  The businesses placed advertisements in the album.
