Mauchline Castle (1)

This tower was built in the 15th century, not for defensive purposes, but as a monastic residence for Melrose Abbey. During the 17th and 18th centuries, dwelling houses were added adjacent to the tower. It is said that Robert Burns married Jean Armour in the dining room here.   The house connected to the castle belonged to Burns' friend Gavin Hamilton.
