Fish Cross Ayr, 1814
Bryden has painted some of the well remembered local characters of early 19th century Ayr. Painting over 100 years after the time he is unable to accurately achieve a physical likeness in terms of facial features, however, working from recorded descriptions of the characters he has made them recognisable through their dress and activity and each character is named along the bottom of the canvas.
