Working at the forge in Stockmoss smithy

Blacksmith Mr MacGill at the forge at Stockmoss, Auchencairn. Dr Werner Kissling, 1956.   This photograph shows blacksmith Mr MacGill standing at the forge in the Stockmoss smithy. He has his hand on the cow-horn grip of the bellows and is using it to heat the fire.   Different temperatures were needed for different kinds of work. Skilled blacksmiths could judge how hot to make the fire and knew by the colour of the flames when it had reached the right temperature.   Dr Werner Kissling (1895-1988) was a German photographer and ethnographer who spent most of his life documenting Scottish crafts, architecture, and agricultural practices. He was associated with Dumfries Museum from the mid-1950s until his death in 1988.   With thanks to the School of Scottish Studies Archives for additional information.
