Football Clubs
Association football is easily Ayrshire's most popular
sport. The county has two senior clubs; Ayr United and Kilmarnock
FC. Kilmarnock is the most successful having won the Scottish
League in 1965 and the Scottish Cup in 1920, 1929 and 1997. More
supporting passion is reserved for the local junior sides which
number at present twenty-three. The first junior matches were
played in 1888 and the Ayrshire Junior Football Association forming
in the next year. The Association lasted until 1968 when all junior
football in Scotland came under the control of the Scottish Junior
Football Association.
