Framed painted glass from Stranraer Provost's Lamp

This is a glass pane from one of the Stranraer Provost’s lamps. It is hand painted with the crest of the Royal Burgh and carries the Latin motto ‘Tutissima Statio’ – Safest Haven. Before local government reorganisation in the 1970s Stranraer, like most other Scottish towns, was run by the Town Council under the leadership of the Provost. Each Provost had two ornate cast iron gas lamps erected on the pavement outside his – or in the very last case, her – front door. And each ex-Provost was allowed one lamp. The tradition of provosts’ lamps ended in 1975 when the Town Council was done away with. But two of the lamps were saved and erected outside the Old Parish Church in Church Street. When the Old Parish Church closed in 2004 and it was decided to remove the two remaining lamps to the front of the Town Kirk in London Road. The lamps required extensive repair and renovation before they could be moved. This painstaking work was carried out by Mr Archie Bell of Stranraer.
