Purchaser's Shopping Cards

These cards allowed shopper's their alloted amount of rationed goods (in this case sugar and butter) from named retailers during the inter-war period. The retailers which these specific books relate to are the Darvel Independant Co-op and the Buttercup Dairy also in Darvel.  These particular books were issued to Mr. Robert Aird of Burnbank Street. Rationing was taken so seriously by the Government that any misuse of these books could result in the culprit being issued with a £100 pound fine, (a hefty amount in 1920), or 6 months imprisonment; or both!
