Puncture repair kit

This puncture repair kit belonged to Hugh Martin, Chief Air Raid Precautions Warden for Dumfries.  Wartime petrol shortages meant that a bicycle was a practical means of transport.  The kit includes patches, sandpaper and glue and instructions for it's use are printed inside the lid of the tin.   ARP Wardens carried whistles to warn of raids and ensure that everyone was off the streets.  They wore a helmet with the letter “W” in white to help distinguish them among crowds of civilians.
