Robert Bryden

Scene from "The Holy Fair"

Period:
19th Century
Description:

Hear how he clears the points o' Faith

Wi' rattlin and thumpin!

Now meekly calm, now wild in wrath,

He's stampan, an' he's jumpan!

His lengthen'd chin, his turn'd-up snout,

His eldritch squeel an' gestures,

O how they fire the heart devout,

Like cantharidian plaisters

On sic a day!

Robert Bryden produced a series of illustrations of scenes from Robert Burns' poems soon after his return to Ayrshire following his studies in London and travels in Spain and Italy. He also produced etchings of local sites with which the poet was connected.
