El Dorado and The Legacy

The extraction of the natural resources found in the region has long been at the core of many aspects of the area’s development – its communities, buildings, and economic importance being among them. The region’s coal deposits, iron ores, lead, building stone and even gold supplied the needs of the industries that used them – heavy engineering probably being the most important. The success and subsequent decline of mining and quarrying in the region has directly influenced towns and communities, some of which have struggled to find alternative employment.
