Free Weekend of Christmas Celebrations

The event is being organised with the help of European Regional Development Funding and aims to bring Kilmarnock’s Christmas traditions to life, past and present.

It kicks off on the 9th December with a Christmas Market in the Town centre. There will be a number of strange spectacles which include the reincarnation of Kilmarnock’s famous characters including Robert Burns, William Wallace, Robert Bruce, William Boyd and Johnnie Walker. They will be undertaking their Christmas shopping in Kilmarnock’s stores and will be engaging in conversation with Kilmarnock shoppers. Music from brass bands and choirs will add a festive spirit.

On Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th, The Dick will come alive with sights, sounds and smells to make even the most cynical get into the Christmas spirit. Mulled wine, mince pies, Christmas decoration demonstrations, carol singing and a fantastic contemporary craft sale are planned to celebrate Christmas in one of Kilmarnock’s most significant buildings.

Sunday 10th will see the Dean Castle transformed with a host of activities for all the family in Christmas Through the Ages. The event will include free Victorian funfair rides, with a helter skelter sited in the courtyard of the castle and a beautiful Victorian carousel on the lawn in front of the castle. So e of the Aladdin pantomime cast will also be there. Storytelling tours about the ghost of christmas past will take place in the castle and a number of craft and local produce stalls will be sited in the courtyard. Medieval music from the Galloway Consort will take place within the castle from the minstrel’s gallery and customary food including roast pig and mulled wine will be available.

In an effort to make the event accessible to everyone, both residents and tourists to the area, a free shuttle bus will be operating form, the train station, The Dick Institute and the Dean Castle.

All events are free. And a programme can be obtained by calling 01563 554900.
