Stirrup pump

Stirrup pumps such as this were used to put out fires caused by incendiary bombs during air raids in World War II. A hose would be attached to the spout and the pump placed in a bucket of water. The metal leg went over the side of the bucket to rest on the ground so that the operator could use it to hold the pump steady with their foot. The handle was then pumped up and down to draw water up into the hose and direct it at the fire.
