Description:
“War Weapons Week” in June 1941 raised £800,000 from the people of Dumfriesshire. It was one of many attempts by local people to help the war effort. In November 1940, £8,000 was raised for the “Spitfire Fund” and two ambulances were presented to the Red Cross. The following May the county raised £840,000 during “Warship Week”. Local people also participated in “Wings for Victory Week” in June 1943, and in June 1944, £900,000 was collected during “Salute the Soldier Week”.
