Wooden chest presented to Provost Dyer & the Inhabitants of Stranraer

Description:

Scotland welcomed refugees from Belgium at the beginning of the First World War in 1914 when Germany invaded their country.  This box was presented to Provost Robert Dyer, Provost of Stranraer and its inhabitants by the Glasgow Corporation of Belgium Refugees in thanks for their assistance and accommodation.  The dedication on the plaque reads:

Presented to Robert Bloomfield Dyer Esq (Provost of Stranraer)

By the Glasgow Corporation Belgium Committee in grateful appreciation of the eminent kindness displayed by him and the inhabitants of Stranraer to the Belgian refugees in Scotland.

By one of whom this box was designed and carved
