Princess Mary Tin

Christmas gift tin, 1914.   Gift boxes like this were sent to servicemen and women for the first Christmas of the war.    The gift was suggested by HRH Princess Mary, the young daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. The boxes contained tobacco, confectionery, pencils, a Christmas card and a photograph of the Princess.   They were distibuted to 2,321,553 service men and women by The Princess Mary's Sailors' and Soldiers' Christmas Fund.   Many were kept as souvenirs although the contents were long since used.
