Homecoming certificate

A welcome home certificate. This was presented by the Parish of Torthorwald to Alexander Young.   Servicemen occasionally received tokens of recognition from their home towns and parishes. Medals, watches and decorative scrolls were typically presented to add to official service medals and gallantry decorations. Names were often added to a Roll of Honour at a work place or in a local community building such as the town hall. Many local parishes created their own unique commemorative certificates to present to men returning from World War One. These were often highly decorated with calligraphy and images.
