Fliegerpfeile

"Fliegerpfeile" were little but heavy iron- or steel made arrows, which were dropped out of 2-seater German aircraft above the enemy trenches at the early stage of the war before they were fitted with machine guns. They caused horrible injuries to horses which were so vital for moving supplies. The Fliegerpfeile were 20 cm long and could easily penetrate helmets. Later they were dropped over the towns of south-west England by Zeppelins to cause panic in the civilian populations. This met with very limited success as the cumbersome airships soon proved no match for the British fighters such as the Sopwith Camel.
