The Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers' Medal for the 1857 Papingo Shoot

Description:
This medal is from John Crichton who became the Captain General of the Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers when the brought down the Papingo at the 1858 Papingo shoot. The medal would have been attached to the society’s trophy. The trophy was first presented to the society in 1724 by David Muir. It is now housed in Kilwinning’s library.

A Papingo shoot is held at the Kilwinning Abbey tower every June. The wooden birds are attached to a pole and put out at the top of the tower. The contesting archers then take turns shooting at it straight up from the foot of the building. The first to bring down the bird is the winner.
