Life In The Middle Ages

Annular brooch with preserved wool fragment

Period:
Late Medieval
Description:

Annular or circular brooches like this replaced pennannular brooches and stick pins during the thirteenth century.  Mineral salts leached out of the brooch during burial and helped to preserve the woolen cloth.  The cloth may be part of the cloak once secured by the brooch.

Annular brooch with broken pin.  The brooch has a circular section with incised transverse grooves.  The pin has been made by longitudinally folding a strip, giving a flat loop and a tapering shank.  Attached to, but not pinned through the brooch, is a fragment of woolen cloth.
