The Jacobite Rebellion

Tax Demand 1745

Description:

Demand made in November 1745 by Prince Charles Edward Stuart for payment of tax by the town of Dumfries for "...the support and Maintenance of His Majesty's forces in Scotland..."

At first the Town Council ignored this demand, by the time Prince Charles entered the town in late December they had formed a committee to consider it but no action had been taken.
