Sword (Hanger)

Period:
17th Century
Description:
This hanger has a blackened steel hilt and grip encrusted with a simple pattern in silver. Short curved swords like this one were used, rather than a long rapier, for stag hunting and for personal protection in a skirmish with cutpurses in dark alleys. They were also quite often carried by officers, on both sides, during the civil war.
