The Sword

Two-handed Sword

Period:
16th Century
Description:
These giant swords were used most commonly in the late 15th and the early 16th centuries. They were oftenused throughout Europe by expert and specialist mercenary regiments known as Landsknechts.  Although these weapons look unwieldy, with the correct training they were incredibly versatile and could be used to devastating effect by infantry.  This example is the largest sword in the Howard de Walden collection and has a total length (including hilt) of 2 meters (about 6 and a half feet)!
