The Sword

Sword Cane

Even late into the 18th century when swords were not worn openly as fashion accessories, it was possible for gentle men to carry concealed weapons for self-defense.  Walking canes became more than just sticks with some becoming quite sophisticated gadgets which could be used to carry objects like maps, or that could be transformed into devices such as telescopes or guns.  Sword canes remained popular until well into the 19th century.

Some well known characters owned  canes such as these including Robert Burns.
