HMS Powerful Gong

This gong is made from shell that was fired at the town of Ladysmith in South Africa, 1899-1900. The shell used was fired from a naval gun from HMS Powerful, in the defence of the siege of Ladysmith during the Boer War.  A Naval Brigade from HMS Powerful travelled overland with 6 guns to assist in the defence of Ladysmith.  The correspondent G.W. Stevens wrote "This handful of sailors was the saving of Ladysmith".  The gong is said to have been used in the Officer's Mess.  The Naval Field Gun Run at the Royal Tournament is descended from the appearance of the crew from HMS Powerful at the tournament in 1900.
