Framed Christmas greeting

Christmas greeting written on a piece of khaki, sent by Thomas Rankine of the Galloway Rifle Volunteers in South Africa during the Boer War to his aunt in Newton Stewart, 1901.  It reads: South Africa 1901 - Friends and relations in the land of the free, Christmas greetings I send on this strip of khaki, Tis not a choice card or a sweet scented packet, For twas torn from the back .... It has sheltered me long in storm and in calm, though dangers I've passed through I've come to no harm, And I hope that time will not remote be, when you'll welcome again your lad in khaki. From your affectionate nephew Thomas Rankine.
