Quern Stone

Period:
Iron Age
Description:
Quern stones were used for grinding grain down into flour.  This is a top stone which would have sat on top of another flat stone.  Grain was poured into the hole and the top stone rotated.  The grains would be crushed between the top and bottom stones and the resulting flour would work its way out to the edge of the stones where it could be collected.
