Samian Ware

Six sherds of Samian ware. The upper right-hand piece appears to show the feet of a deer, and the lower right one the hind quarters of a large animal, perhaps a lion. These may be elements of hunting scenes. The other pieces are too worn to identify confidently.   This readily identifiable form of red pottery, decorated with patterns by being pressed in a mould, was made in Gaul (France) and Italy. It was high-quality tableware, particularly popular and widespread in the Western Roman Empire from about 50 BC to the early 3rd century AD.
