Samian ware fragments, Carzield

Description:

Three sherds of Samian pottery, from the Roman fort at Carzield.

This readily identifiable form of red pottery, decorated with patterns by being pressed in a mould, was made in Gaul (France) and Italy. It was high-quality tableware, particularly popular and widespread in the Western Roman Empire from about 50 BC to the early 3rd century AD.
