Bone Spindle Whorl, Whithorn

Description:

Two bone spindle whorls, made by sawing off the end of an animal femoral bone.

Only six bone whorls were found at Whithorn, in contrast with seventy-two stone ones. Being less dense and therefore lighter than stone, these whorls would have been used to spin comparatively lighter threads.
