Shale Bangle Fragments, 8th century in date.
Two of the ten fragments of shale bangles found at Whithorn. Analysis has indicated they are made of a canneloid shale in imitation of jet.
Cannel coals are typically found in Carboniferous deposits, such as the Ayrshire Coal Measures. There are no outcrops known in Wigtownshire, the nearest being Thornhill or Upper Nithsdale, though the material could also be present in drift deposits or washed up on beaches.
