St Connel's Church, Kirkconnel

Early Medieval

The remains of the church of St Connel, a mid-7th century saint. Most of the surviving fabric of the church is 13th century or later in date, but a large number of carved crosses and gravestones from the site show that it was a focal church in Upper Nithsdale for several centuries before that,

The church ruins were renovated in 1929 during the General Strike by unemployed miners, paid for by the local minister. More recent work in 2005-6 uncovered carved stones from the 9th to 15th centuries. The church continued in use until the mid 18th century, when a new parish church was built closer to the town.
