Whitby-style Anglian strap-end

Period:
Early Medieval
Description:

Whitby-style Anglian strap-end with animal-headed terminal. The strap-end is split at the butt for affixing to a belt or strap, which would have been secured by rivets through the two holes. The scar of a small rivet or stud in the middle of the plate indicates that a separate decorative panel, now missing, may have filled the area above the animal head.
