Eadberht was king of Northumbria from 737 to 758. In 750, as part of a campaign to expand Northumbria, he invaded Kyle (modern South Ayrshire) and took it from Dumnagual, leader of the Strathclyde Britons. Sixty five Anglo-Saxon coins were excavated at Whithorn. This is the largest group from any Scottish site.
The obverse has the legend EOTBERHTVS (Eadberht) around a central cross. The reverse shows a stylised stag, facing right, with a cross between its tail.
