Woolworking contact sheet

Contact Sheet, Dumfries Museum   This is a sheet of contact prints and research notes compiled by Dr Kissling. It shows various stages of processing wool in Eriskay in 1934.   Larger versions of some of these photographs can be seen here.   Dr Kissling made hundreds of themed contact sheets like this as part of his research. He used them to put photographs together and take notes about the processes that they depicted.   These contact sheets are now kept in the collections at Dumfries Museum. Dr Kissling began using the museum as a base from the mid-1950s. He worked at a desk in a lean-to shed, processing old and new photographs as well as offering advice on local objects.   With thanks to Ralph Coleman, David Lockwood and Elaine Kennedy for providing information.   Dr Werner Kissling (1895-1988) was a German photographer and ethnographer who spent most of his life documenting Scottish crafts, architecture, and agricultural practices. He was associated with Dumfries Museum from the mid-1950s until his death in 1988.
