Johanna and Georg Kissling with their children

Johanna and Georg Kissling with their children, Breslau, 1890s   These two photographs show Werner Kissling with his parents, Johanna and Georg Kissling, and his brothers, Georg Conrad and Gunther.   In the first photograph Georg Kissling is standing surrounded by his three children, all wearing sailor suits. We don't know which of the brothers is Dr Kissling.   Dr Kissling remembered those sailor suits. He told his friend Ralph Coleman that they had been dressed up because someone important was coming for tea and they were to be on their best behaviour.   He refused to put on his sailor suit, which angered his father. Dr Kissling never got on well with his father who was very formal, correct, and upright.   The second photograph shows Werner Kissling as a baby with his mother. He was very close to his mother both as a child and as an adult.   With thanks to Ralph Coleman for providing information.   Dr Werner Kissling (1895-1988) was a German photographer and ethnographer who spent most of his life documenting Scottish crafts, architecture, and agricultural practices. He was associated with Dumfries Museum from the mid-1950s until his death in 1988.
