Eight pictures of hooping a wheel, Cambridge Smithy, Lauder, Berwickshire

"This craft requires the co-operation of blacksmith and wheelwright and is no longer practised.

a) The iron bar is formed into a hoop bender.

b) The hoop is joined by welding.

c & d) The hoop and the wheel measurements are checked. The hoop should be 1” less than the size of the wheel.

e) The heated hoop is cautiously fitted over the wheel.

f) The drawer pulls the hoop over the wheel. Utmost speed is essential at this stage

g) & h) The wheel is then cooled to ensure a tight fit and drive the spokes firmly home."
